"GRITeam - Hong Kong Four Poles" Leadership Programme: The North Pole of HKG - Lin Ma Hang

Hong Kong - March 2025

Sponsored by "Centaline Charity Fund". To further broaden students' horizons, Inspire Education Association and the Hong Kong Professional Association for the Gifted and Talented successfully conducted the second leg of the "GRITeam - Hong Kong Four Poles" leadership programme on March 30. This time, students ventured to Hong Kong's "North Pole" – Lin Ma Hang – for an immersive exploration blending natural ecology and historical culture.

On the day of the activity, the team first ascended Robin's Nest, trekking through former border restricted areas before delving into the historic Lin Ma Hang Lead Mine Tunnel. From the vantage point, students not only contrasted the landfill views with Shenzhen's urban skyline but also observed unique flora under instructors' guidance. They examined mineral-glinting quartz strip, wind-swayed " Chinese lavender", vibrant Hakka orange, and Hong Kong's native rare Chinese New Year flowers (Enkianthus quinqueflorus). Students also learned to identify toxic plants like lantana and elephant’s ear, enhancing wilderness safety awareness.

This "moving classroom" experience allowed students to physically engage with Hong Kong's distinctive borderland history and ecological diversity. Each step – from industrial relics in abandoned mines to rare montane vegetation – became an interdisciplinary learning opportunity. The journey not only strengthened participants' physical endurance and observation skills but also nurtured their sense of responsibility toward nature conservation and cultural heritage preservation.

With the successful completion of the North Pole expedition, "GRITeam - Hong Kong Four Poles" will proceed with the remaining two destinations, guiding students to discover more of Hong Kong's extreme landscapes.
