An Ecological Field Trip to Ha Pak Nai Wetland and Mangrove Forest

Hong Kong - March 2025

On March 28, 2025, Inspire Education Association led a group of secondary school students on a unique ecological expedition to Ha Pak Nai Wetland and its mangrove forest. The activity aimed to immerse students in nature, introduce them to wetland biodiversity, explore the distinctive ecosystem of mangroves, and inspire reflection on the importance of environmental conservation.

Ha Pak Nai boasts rich wetland ecosystems, serving as a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Guided by instructors, students observed the mangrove’s ecological structure up close, learning how different species—such as hermit crabs and mudskippers—interdepend in the intertidal zone. To their amazement, the seemingly ordinary mudflat teemed with vibrant life. Beyond studying these creatures’ behaviors, they gained a deeper understanding of each organism’s critical role in the ecological chain. This immersive learning experience transformed textbook knowledge into vivid, three-dimensional lessons, reinforcing the urgency of protecting natural environments.

In addition to ecological studies, the activity emphasized teamwork and problem-solving skills. Students worked in groups to complete tasks such as documenting species distribution and measuring water salinity. Through communication and shared discoveries, they honed their collaboration skills while developing critical thinking and observational abilities.

This field trip not only broadened students’ horizons but also prompted them to reflect on humanity’s relationship with nature. At Kai Yin, we believe true learning extends beyond classroom walls—it thrives when students step into the world to explore, experience, and reflect firsthand!
